SEGA 12-hour Relay
SEGA (Students Encouraging Global Awareness), a global awareness group at the Riverside Secondary School, Port Coquitlam, B.C., Canada, organizes an annual 12-Hour Relay to raise funds for local, national and global groups.
Last year, 120 students ran laps all night to raise funds for a local homeless shelter and for RESPECT's computer project in Northern Uganda. Since our initial involvement in this project, SEGA members have also exchanged photos and letters with students at the Agoro Community in Kitgum, Uganda.
The first letters from Uganda were quite moving and most students have been fortunate to receive a second letter from their pen pals. We hope that this correspondence will continue on an individual basis, as many SEGA members will be graduating in a few weeks.
This year, the 12-Hour Relay donated proceeds to another local homeless shelter, Portland House, and to Kids Can Free the Children. We will continue our commitment to raising global awareness in our school and next year's SEGA members will continue to support RESPECT and, hopefully, begin new pen pal relationships.
