Ugandan IDPs to Receive Sun Oven

Beginning this year RESPECT International will be implementing a program to buy a much-needed Sun Oven for Ugandan internally displaced persons (IDPs). As our readers know, refugees in many parts of the world live in situations near to or tantamount to abject poverty.

RESPECT is organizing the purchase of the Sun Oven to help provide nutritional meals to IDPs in Uganda, and to assist Ugandans become more self-sufficient.

The estimated purchase price is 175-200 USD, per oven, without taking into account fluctuating currency rates. Ovens will be delivered to their Ugandan destination ten to twelve weeks after purchase.

After the Sun Oven is delivered, it will be used to produce bakery goods and cooked meals for the school nutrition project, and also to greatly benefit displaced women and children. Nutritionally, the Ugandan IDPs will benefit from the addition of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins currently lacking in their diets.

ACDA RESPECT members will oversee the project at the Ugandan sites building a base of increasingly self-sufficient IDPs. Efforts will include having IDPs in positions such as general manager, baker, baking assistant, sales and delivery, cashier, and accounting.

The ACDA crew has taken photos of the sites where the project(s) will be set up, and is working on a system for the setup of the ovens. As the time nears for the sun ovens to be delivered, they are identifying who will be running the crews.
