Budumburam Refugee Camp Computer Project

RESPECT Ghana has started plans to set up a Computer Resource Center on the Budumburam Refugee Camp. A first step towards attaining this goal is a meeting planned between the RESPECT Ghana Team and the Project Officer for World Computer Exchange (WCE) responsible for West Africa.

Late last year World Computer Exchange agreed to facilitate the setting up of a Resource Center on the camp by shipping computers to Ghana to be used for that purpose. The International Coordinator is the brains behind this project.

In an effort to meet this challenge, RESPECT Ghana has been collaborating with some organizations to draw up plans as to how such a facility would be set-up on the camp taking into cognizance a number of problems and concerns that were raised during consultations with some school Heads on the camp.

The Manager and staff of DATA LINK Center for Computer and Business Studies in Ghana are volunteering expert advice and services to support the initiative. Foundation for Better Tomorrow and Self Help Initiative for Sustainable Development (SHIFSD) are some local Non-Governmental Organizations with the latter based on the camp, which are also very supportive of plans being drawn for a smooth take-off of the project. It is hoped that other organizations and agencies would be called upon to assist in the realizing of the project goals.

Even though the lack of funding still impacts on efforts it is hoped that after the proposed meeting with WCE, there shall be more coordinated efforts towards the filling of the implementation plans, seeking of other assistances towards the setting up of the center in the near future. Periodic Updates shall be made available at the RESPECT forum and through the e-Zine for all interested persons to contribute ideas, etc.
